Sunderland are amongst a group of four sides set to take a look at Lawrence Shankland after the Ayr striker's ridiculous start to the season, according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (23/09; page 61).
Shankland has been superb so far this term. He has scored 15 goals in 12 appearances for the Scottish Championship side in all competitions, and now has a queue of clubs forming ready to consider a potential move.
Jack Ross' men ended their wait for a win in September in emphatic style on Saturday as they thrashed Rochdale 4-1 at the Stadium of Light to move up to third in the League One table.
Despite the impressive victory, it is probably not a massive surprise that Shankland is a player that Ross has his eye on with January edging onto the horizon.
Sunderland do not have a huge number of striker options available, so strengthening up front will surely be a priority during the next window for the Black Cats.
But if Shankland - who briefly played under Ross at St Mirren - maintains his current strike-rate, it would be almost inevitable that Sunderland would have to see off significantly more competition if they hoped to bag his signature.
