Sheffield United returned from Sheffield Wednesday with a 3-1 win on Friday.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Under-23s suffered a 3-1 defeat to their counterparts from Sheffield United on Friday, and some Owls fans were quick to find their scapegoat.

The only senior player in Sheffield Wednesday’s XI, David Jones faced an intriguing battle with Sheffield United’s Paul Coutts in the centre of midfield – from which the recovering Blade emerged the winner.

After a bright spell for the Owls, Coutts – whose teammates included the experienced defenders Martin Cranie and Daniel Lafferty – put Sheffield United ahead from the penalty spot, before goals from Oliver Greaves and Cranie extended the visitors’ lead.

And although Liam Waldock did pull one back for Sheffield Wednesday shortly before half-time, there was no way back for the shell-shocked hosts.

Whether they were there to witness or not, these Owls followers had strong words for Jones, whose only first team appearance this season arrived in the EFL Cup…
