David Unsworth is clearly a big admirer of young Everton centre-back Ryan Astley.
Back in March, the Toffees reserve team coach handed the 16-year-old a debut for the club’s U23 side and Astley took his chance in style.
“I can’t remember an under-16 coming in and starting a game at this level since I’ve been here but I thought he was the best player on the pitch. It was a stunning performance,” Unsworth told the club’s official website after a 2-1 win against Sunderland.
Astley has largely played for Everton’s U18s since, but he made his first U23 appearance of 2018/19 in Thursday’s Premier League International Cup clash against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Once again, Unsworth had only positive things to say about a player who continues to impress well above his age group.
“Ryan Astley was absolutely magnificent at centre-back. There were so many positives to take,” the former Toffees defender told Everton’s official website on Thursday night.
Bassala Sambou and Ellis Simms were on target as the young blues battled to a 2-2 draw away at Brighton, while the likes of Kyle John and Anthony Gordon also stood out.
But Astley, who does not turn 17 until October, looks to be developing into one of the most exciting young talents behind the scenes at Goodison Park.
