After their 1-0 defeat to Norwich City on Saturday, Middlesbrough were under pressure to get back to winning ways in midweek, particularly after Leeds United hammered Preston North End on Tuesday. And the 2-0 victory against Bolton Wanderers was exactly what the doctor ordered.
But, while the result was certainly positive, the performance was far from stellar. Boro were not at their best against Phil Parkinson’s side and one player in particular seems to have left the fans rather underwhelmed.
Jordan Hugill completed 90 minutes for the first time since arriving on loan from West Ham United in the summer but, quite literally, missed his chance with Assombalonga dropped to the bench.
The former Preston target man failed to score with a couple of presentable headed opportunities, meaning he is yet to register a goal in three league games for his new club.
Boro fans certainly believe improvements can be made for a striker who moved to West Ham in January for £9 million. And if Hugill is to have any sort of a future at the London Stadium, he must start putting these chances away.
Besic in for Saville and Britt in for Hugill on saturday boro, cheers— jack devlin (@jackk_devlin) September 20, 2018
If Britt had put the same performance in as Hugill did last night he would have got slaughtered for it.....hoping it is down to a lack of match fitness but personally thought he looked average.— Adam Law (@lawsy78) September 20, 2018
Didn’t really do alot tonight tbh but was his first start and only seen bits of him before that but he’ll most likely improve with a few more games in him— alisha (@AHarrison_7) September 19, 2018
Saville anonymous what game were you watching I agree with Hugill he wasn’t great but Saville was fantastic took his goal well and contributed to defending when Bolton had little attacks— Adam Macadie (@adam_macadie1) September 19, 2018
I thought Hugill worked hard but struggled. The thing is McNair, Besic, Saville and Hugill are all short of match fitness. Plus we have Fry, Wing, Chapman and Batth that didn’t even feature. We’re looking strong imo.— Jam (@Jambo_slice) September 19, 2018
Need to stronger Jordan holding up and back to goal, just look what damage big Britt done with 15 minutes— David Wood (@woodydm) September 19, 2018
Was really disappointed with Hugill. Sure he’s better player than he showed tonight. Hold up play wasn’t good enough, finishing poor. Can’t believe Pulis thought he had a good game.— For The Love Of Boro (@4TheLoveOfBoro) September 19, 2018
