Rangers kicked off their Europa League group stage campaign with a 2-2 draw at Villarreal this evening – impressing Chris Sutton in the process.
The Gers made it all the way to the group stage after seeing off Shkupi, Osijek, Maribor and Ufa in a lengthy qualifying campaign this summer, but few were expecting big things from Steven Gerrard's side.
After all, tonight's opponents Villarreal finished fifth in La Liga last season and possessed players of outstanding quality, which took just one minute to show as Carlos Bacca smashed the hosts into a very early lead at El Madrigal.
Rangers ended the first half without a single shot on target as Villarreal continued to press, but they were made to rue their missed chances as Scott Arfield finished off a fine move to equalise.
Substitute Gerard Moreno instantly put Villarreal back in front with a great finish, but a sweeping counter attack ended with Kyle Lafferty bagging another equaliser for Rangers, clinching a 2-2 draw.
Rangers were resilient and almost nicked it late on as Scott Arfield's shot from a Graham Dorrans pass was saved, but Gerrard will be delighted with a point.
After the game, pundit Chris Sutton took to Twitter to give his reaction, praising the guts and grit of Gerrard's side whist hailing the outstanding performance to earn a 'great' draw in Spain.
