HITC Sport understands Sunderland and Scunthorpe are tracking former Middlesbrough starlet Junior Mondal.

Sunderland and Scunthorpe are among several clubs keeping tabs on former Middlesbrough winger Junior Mondal, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Mondal has been earning rave reviews for Evo-Stik Premier North side Whitby Town so far this season and his performances have alerted a number of Football League clubs.

League One duo Sunderland and Scunthorpe have been alerted to the skilful attacker and they are monitoring his progress ahead of potential moves when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Mondal was very highly-regarded at Middlesbrough after coming through the club’s youth ranks from the age of 11.

The 21-year-old becamse a scholar at Middlesbrough in 2013 before signing his first professional contract a year later.

Mondal was surprisingly released by Middlesbrough in the summer of 2017 without making a first-team appearance, with injuries holding up his progress at the Riverside during his last 12 months at the club.

The talented forward had trials at Aberdeen after leaving Middlesbrough, but he has rebuilt his career at Whitby Town since joining the non-league club in November 2017.
