Mooney joined Cheltenham on loan from Villa on deadline day.

Kelsey Mooney scored his first goal of the season for Cheltenham Town on Saturday after joining the League Two minnows from Aston Villa on loan on deadline day – and some Villa fans reacted by applauding the youngster.

Mooney, 19, has joined Cheltenham on loan until January in a bid to improve The Robins’ chances of avoiding a relegation dogfight, with alarm bells ringing after a dismal 4-0 loss to Gloucestershire rivals Forest Green Rovers.

Starting the match, Mooney was used in an attacking midfield role and scored Cheltenham’s third in a 3-1 away win at Northampton Town, as he looks to show Villa why he deserves to be given a chance in the first team.

Mooney, son of Football League legend Tommy Mooney, posted on Twitter after scoring his first professional goal of his career as he helped Cheltenham pick up just their second league win of the season.

Mooney has plenty of competition ahead of him in the pecking order at Aston Villa, especially since Steve Bruce lured Tammy Abraham to Villa Park from Chelsea on a season-long loan.

But if he continues to impress at Whaddon Road with Cheltenham, he could indeed catch the attention of Villa manager Bruce. He certainly delighted Villa fans with his instant impact.
