Jack Simpson did not get his move to Rangers this summer.
The Daily Record claimed that Steven Gerrard was hoping to bring the 21-year-old Bournemouth defender to Ibrox. But Eddie Howe blocked the move with Simpson seemingly part of his plans for this season.
But, since the transfer window slammed shut last week, it is becoming increasingly apparent that Simpson might have been better off honing his trade north of the border.
His only outing has been in the EFL Cup so far in 2018/19 while he has been left out of the matchday squad for all four of Bournemouth’s Premier League games so far. And reports in Fanatik that the Cherries are hoping to sign Domagoj Vida in January after rejecting a £14 million summer bid suggest that Simpson will fall ever further down the pecking order.
He already has Simon Francis, Steve Cook and the excellent Nathan Ake ahead of him. Vida, a World Cup finalist with Croatia, would perhaps cast doubt on how important Simpson really is to Howe at this present time.
The problem is, however, a move to Rangers might have passed him by given that both Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley sealed moves to Ibrox on deadline day.
Simpson, then, could be stuck in limbo until the end of the season and restricted to the odd cup outing.
