Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Jason Cundy thinks Manchester United should approach Mauricio Pochettino to be their next manager if they sack Jose Mourinho.
Pressure is mounting on Mourinho following United’s 3-0 home defeat to Spurs in the Premier League on Monday (August 27) – their second loss in three matches.
Meanwhile, Pochettino has guided Tottenham to a 100 percent start to the new season and Cundy thinks the Argentine would be a huge success at Old Trafford.
“If I was in charge of Manchester United and Jose is no longer the man, which increasingly looks like being the case, I would go and get the best man right now in the Premier League: Pochettino,” the talkSPORT presenter said during his Sports Bar show.
“He is pound-for-pound the best manager, for the budget he has or hasn’t got, and what he has done with that squad since he has been there. He has improved them.
“Can you imagine if Pochettino had the budget that Jose has had at Manchester United?”
Bringing the 46-year-old to the Red Devils could prove a tricky prospect, though, considering the bad blood between the two clubs.
As the Sun reported last year, the hierarchies at both sides have a strained relationship that stems from transfers involving Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov and Zeki Fryers and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is reluctant to do business with their rivals.
Any potential deal would be further complicated by the fact that Pochettino only signed a new five-year contract worth £8.5m a year, as reported by the Guardian, in May of this year.
