Ask any Swansea City fan and they will tell you that a new centre-back is a must before Friday’s transfer deadline.
The South Wales side cashed in on Alfie Mawson, Federico Fernandez and Kyle Bartley this summer while failing to sign a replacement for any of the aforementioned trio. As a result, Swansea fans will be praying that Mike Van der Hoorn and Joe Rodon do not fall foul of injury or suspension.
Although the EFL Cup clash against Crystal Palace on Tuesday night suggests that they do have one player waiting in the wings to step up if required – 21-year-old Cian Harries.
The Wales U21 international made his debut for the Swans against Roy Hodgson’s Premier League visitors. And although Palace won 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium - Aleksander Sorloth scoring the only goal of the game - there were plenty of positives to take from a youthful Swansea side.
Dan James and Yan Dhanda were impressive in attack but Harries was perhaps the best of the bunch. Blessed with impressive positional strength, ability in the air and a superb range of passing, the former Coventry City man looked the real deal against the Eagles.
He not only stopped attacks but started them, too, his composure on the ball marking him out as a centre-back made for Swansea. No wonder the fans were impressed.
Six Welsh players for Swans tonight, very young side played well against a much more experienced Palace team. Cian Harries impressive on debut and Dan James was bright too (although lack of composure with end product at times). Good night for Swansea, result largely irrelevant.— Guto Llewelyn (@GutoLlewelyn) August 28, 2018
Cian Harries has got a cracking left foot on him. Promising player. Swans knocking the ball around very well.— Swansea City.. (@SwansCity1912) August 28, 2018
George Byers, Yan Dhanda, Daniel James and Cian Harries was outstanding.— Rhys (@Footyrhys) August 28, 2018
All the youngsters performed with great credit tonight, but Cian Harries was particularly impressive #swans— Phil Richards (@PhilRichards82) August 28, 2018

I thought Cian Harries looked superb last night.— EatSleepFootyRepeat (@eatsleep_footy) August 29, 2018
Got a wonderful passing range on him. Can be physical perhaps not quite quick enough but if your position is good that doesn’t have to kill you at CB.
Very admirable performance by a seriously young Swans side against a much more experienced Palace team. I thought Yan Dhanda and Cian Harries were particularly impressive but an all-round good display. Not bothered about being out of the cup at all, good night for the club.— Guto Llewelyn (@GutoLlewelyn) August 28, 2018
