Cian Harries started for Swansea City as they were beaten by Premier League Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night.

Ask any Swansea City fan and they will tell you that a new centre-back is a must before Friday’s transfer deadline.

The South Wales side cashed in on Alfie Mawson, Federico Fernandez and Kyle Bartley this summer while failing to sign a replacement for any of the aforementioned trio. As a result, Swansea fans will be praying that Mike Van der Hoorn and Joe Rodon do not fall foul of injury or suspension.

Although the EFL Cup clash against Crystal Palace on Tuesday night suggests that they do have one player waiting in the wings to step up if required – 21-year-old Cian Harries.

The Wales U21 international made his debut for the Swans against Roy Hodgson’s Premier League visitors. And although Palace won 1-0 at the Liberty Stadium – Aleksander Sorloth scoring the only goal of the game – there were plenty of positives to take from a youthful Swansea side.

Dan James and Yan Dhanda were impressive in attack but Harries was perhaps the best of the bunch. Blessed with impressive positional strength, ability in the air and a superb range of passing, the former Coventry City man looked the real deal against the Eagles.

He not only stopped attacks but started them, too, his composure on the ball marking him out as a centre-back made for Swansea. No wonder the fans were impressed.
