Jack Ross' Sunderland reportedly want to offer Ryan Christie an escape route out of Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

Not for the first time this summer, Sunderland’s former St Mirren boss Jack Ross is looking to Scotland for bargain signings.

Ross has already brought the excellent Hibernian midfielder Dylan McGeouch to the Stadium of Light on a free and has been linked with Celtic youngsters Calvin Miller and Lewis Morgan. Now, it seems he is eyeing another of Celtic’s fresh-faced starlets – and this is Sunderland’s most exciting transfer target of his reign so far.

The Scottish Sun reports that the Black Cats want to sign Ryan Christie on an initial loan deal with a view to signing him permanently in January.

It is reported that Celtic will listen to offers for the 23-year-old, who will be a free-agent this time next year and has not featured since the Champions League qualifier against Rosenberg.

Sunderland fans should not judge Christie on his lack of opportunities at Parkhead. A stunning loan spell at Aberdeen, for whom he scored eight goals and assisted 15 last season, shows that he could bring creativity, skill and end product to Ross’ Sunderland side.

In fact, the former Inverness youngster would be one of the most naturally gifted players in League One and a very daunting arrival, at least as far as the rest of the division is concerned.

Sunderland have picked up seven points from nine so far and Christie’s arrival would only take them to another level.
