Odegaard has failed to live up to his potential at Madrid and spent the last season and a half on loan at Heerenveen, before being linked to Aston Villa.

Aston Villa has emerged as a reported potential destination for Real Madrid starlet Martin Odegaard and the reaction of fans has been split.

According to the Mirror, the Spanish club are keen to send the 19-year-old on loan to an English side as they hope exposing him to a tougher style of football and a pressurised environment will aid his development.

The report suggests that Villa and Derby County are interested in Odegaard, with both clubs looking to bring in new additions through the loan market before the window closes.

Having made his first-team debut at Stromsgodset at the age of just 13, the Norweigan arrived at the Bernabeu when he was 16, after Los Blancos won the battle for his signature, reportedly beating other European giants such as Manchester United, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

The forward, having underwhelmed at Madrid and struggled to break into the first-team, was sent out on loan to Heerenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie for 18 months in January 2017.

Odegaard is comfortable in any of the three attacking midfield positions behind the striker but has played most of his football on the right wing, often given the license to roam freely.

Due to their financial problems earlier in the summer Villa have not been very active in the transfer market and, if Steve Bruce can get the 19-year-old playing anywhere near his potential, he would be an excellent addition.

The news has proved divisive among Villa fans, with some excited by the arrival of a young Madrid star and others feeling it is a foolish move.
