Newcastle were reportedly in talks with Lyon over a move for Maolida.
Lyon striker Myziane Maolida is reportedly the subject of interest from Patrick Vieira's OGC Nice over a loan move across France, just days after it was reported Lyon were in talks with Newcastle United.
The Mirror claimed that Newcastle were interested in landing the 19-year-old striker on a permanent basis after breaking into the Lyon side and scoring three goals in 22 appearances - including a goal against Nice.
Now, the French club are interested in luring the Newcastle-linked star to the Allianz Arena this summer according to French newspaper L'Equipe, with European transfer windows extended until August 31.
Newcastle missed out on a number of striker targets before finally landing Salomon Rondon on a loan-to-buy deal that has seen Dwight Gayle move in the opposite direction to West Bromwich Albion for the season.
Maolida is also said to have attracted interest from Spanish side Real Betis as well as Newcastle, but it seems Newcastle have now suffered a double blow - failing to sign Maolida, and potentially set to miss out in reigniting their interest down the line.
That is because Vieira is looking to land the striker this summer, in a bid to improve Nice's chances of European qualification from Ligue 1.
Newcastle have limited options up front after selling Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham, but do boast Japan international Yoshinori Muto after landing the target man from Mainz - as well as Spaniard Joselu.
