Newcastle United fans have not enjoyed the best of pre-season preparations for their second year back in the Premier League, with several defeats in warm-up matches and not as many arrivals as they had hoped.

The Magpies have made some good signings with the small budget allocated by owner Mike Ashley, with Salomon Rondon one of the best arrivals.

However, Rafa Benitez did manage to get a former player of his to put pen to paper, with Federico Fernandez signing on a two-year deal, and Newcastle fans have taken to social media to react to the news.

Fernandez links up with his former Napoli boss from Championship side Swansea for a fee of around £6million, with Newcastle having needed some defenders to bolster their defensive line.

And, after news that one of Benitez's main centre-backs Florian Lejuene had successful surgery on his knee, the need for a central defender with experience was apparent.

The Argentine certainly does not lack the experience needed to play for a club like Newcastle, having made 44 appearances for Italian giants Napoli and 128 for former top-flight side Swansea.

The Spaniard's decision to bring the central defender to Newcastle is a shrewd one, and the player is likely to fit right into Benitez's plans with his close relationship with the manager.

Fernandez will be keen on cementing a place in Newcastle's side, with their 2018/19 campaign beginning on Saturday against Spurs at St James' Park.

Benitez may also be keen on exploring the loan market before the window shuts later this month, but the 58-year-old will have to deal with what he has at his disposal until then.
