Aston Villa defied Tottenham's interest to keep hold of midfielder.
Aston Villa scored a major victory on transfer deadline day when they retained the services of Jack Grealish.
Tottenham Hotspur had been trying to sign Grealish since June, with the saga dragging right up until the final day of the transfer window.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy's gamble failed to pay off, with Spurs attempting to take advantage of Villa's financial crisis.
Villa were facing the potential threat of administration amid financial problems.
If Spurs had simply paid up then, when Villa were desperate, they may have got their man.
Instead, Villa found investment in late July, and monetary stresses eased.
This left the Championship side in the driving seat and with Grealish staying professional and refusing to strike or try to force a move, Tottenham didn't manage to convince Villa to sell.
After a seriously worrying transfer window, Villa ended it on a high by keeping their local hero and star man.
Fans were quick to mock Spurs and chairman Daniel Levy after the transfer window closed...

Delighted @JackGrealish1 has stayed. He may well end up going to Spurs in the future, but for now,I’d like to send the below message to @SpursOfficial and in particular, Daniel Levy #avfc #utv #superjack pic.twitter.com/LLTaHlT2Xi— Ben Redding (@benired) August 9, 2018
Daniel Levy, a man who looked to exploit a serious financial crisis at another club, with a potential winding up order and administration, for his own gain. Why are the media not criticising this despicable leech-like behaviour? #avfc— Jonathan Parker (@Cagliari_Villa) August 9, 2018
