According to a report from Sky Sports News, Southampton remain interested in signing Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck, but the England international's wage demands could prove to be a major stumbling block.

Saints boss Mark Hughes will be desperate to bolster his attacking ranks before this evening's 5pm deadline, after his side's impotency in front of goal nearly cost them their Premier League status last season.

Welbeck joined the Gunners from Manchester United in the summer of 2014, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £16 million, but injuries have hampered his progress at the Emirates.

The 27-year-old has scored just 27 goals for Arsenal, but that isn't to say that he doesn't still have a lot to offer at the very highest level, and his power and pace would provide Southampton with something entirely different in the final third.

Welbeck is believed to be valued at around £15 million by the Gunners, and if Southampton could pick him up for somewhere in that region, it could turn out to be a real coup for the south coast club.
