According to a report from Norwegian media out Dagbladet, Arsenal are set to challenge north London rivals Tottenham for the signature of KRC Genk midfielder Sander Berge, with today’s 5pm transfer deadline rapidly approaching.

Tottenham are yet to make a single signing so far this summer, much to the bemusement of their fans, whilst their bitter rivals Arsenal have made five additions to their squad as Unai Emery embarks on an exciting new era at the Emirates.

Norwegian publication Dagbladet claims that Spurs could be inching closer to their first signing of the window with a move for Berge, 20, but they will face stiff competition from the Gunners.

The nine-capped Norway international is a defensive midfielder by trade, but it could be argued that he would be a signing for the future, rather than for the here and now.

Quite where he will end up playing this season, though, remains to be seen.

According to Transfer Markt, Berge is valued at around £8.1 million, and in today’s market, that would represent excellent value for money for someone with the 20-year-old’s quality and potential.
