Newcastle United are running out of time to sign the attack-minded left-back coveted by Rafa Benitez.
A potential deal for the PSG youngster Stanley N’Soki appears to be dead in the water, while the Guardian (live blog, 1.08pm) claims that Benitez wanted Stoke City’s Erik Pieters but was told ‘no’ by the Newcastle board.
At 30, Pieters did not fit the Magpies’ mould of signing players aged 26 and under. Fortunately for Benitez, however, at least Jorge ticks that particular box.
Jorge, who has played once for Brazil, moved to Monaco last summer from Flamengo for £7.5 million as a replacement for Bernard Mendy. He impressed in Ligue 1 with his pace and aggressive approach to attacking, although he managed just two assists in his 22 domestic starts.
Le10 Sport, however, add that any deal for Jorge will be ‘complicated’ although it is not explained why. Perhaps Monaco, who have once again seen a whole host of key players depart this summer, do not want to sell a 22-year-old who is thought to have a big future in the Principality.
Can Benitez stand another set-back?
