West Bromwich Albion may have beaten Aston Villa to the signing of Sam Johnstone, but the new signing didn’t enjoy the best of debuts at the Hawthorns.
Johnstone immediately became a favourite at West Brom after he moved to them instead of Villa this summer.
However, the stopper’s debut did not go according to plan, as Albion were shocked by Bolton Wanderers.
Johnstone looked shaky in his first appearance for the Baggies, as West Brom lost 2-1.
And the initial reaction the former Villa goalkeeper’s has not been positive from the West Brom crowd.
Really not sure on Johnstone he doesnt come off his line— Callum Burns (@CallumWBA) August 4, 2018
Did Albion v Bolton today and, while it's way too early to draw concrete conclusions, there were some worrying signs for #WBA. 1. Gibbs should stand out in the Championship. He didn't. 2. Johnstone got down very slowly for both goals. Wonder if he's fully fit?— Steve Madeley (@SteveMadeleyWWA) August 4, 2018
I thought Johnstone had an absolute shocker. Didn’t command his box, looked totally shaky and couldn’t stop a shot.— Brom Jon (@Jon_Foz) August 4, 2018
All good points Steve! Johnstone was awful - glued to his line!— paul faulkner (@superbobgod) August 4, 2018
Did anyone ask BD in presser why only 1 sub and no mozza?
Sam Johnstone was dreadful today . That’s second goal was just awful how he didn’t save it— dylan ashmore (@WBADyl) August 4, 2018
Does Sam Johnstone realise he’s allowed outside his 6 yard box? ... all the games I’ve seen him play so far.... he’s a massive drop down from foster! I wouldn’t be surprisedto see myhill in goal #wba— Liam Dunn (@dunnda) August 4, 2018
Never rated hegazi ide play the city lad, nyom kanu nowhere near good enough, address that and i think we’ll be ok. Also maybe abit harsh but johnstone was way too slow on both goals for me #wba— olay williams (@olaywilliams) August 4, 2018
We need a goal scorer, Sam Johnstone looks very hesitant and Hegaci wasn’t the best today, and on the whole very poor, need a lot of work and as for Kanu he has no place at any football club 2/2— Rob Paddock (@RobPaddockWBA) August 4, 2018
Johnstone actually made a slow start at Villa, before he became an integral part of their first team.
The England youth international grew into his role at Villa Park, and is proven quality in the Championship.
West Brom will be hoping to bounce back from opening day defeat, as Darren Moore’s side are one of the favourites to be promoted this season.
