Rotherham United are lining up a move for Northampton Town midfielder Matt Crooks, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Northampton are facing a battle to keep hold of the defensive midfielder before the close of the transfer window following their relegation from League One. Sixfields.

 

A number of clubs have been monitoring Crook's situation. Crooks started in Saturday's opening League Two game against Lincoln, but Northampton are bracing themselves for offers for the former Huddersfield Town man before the end of the month.

Crooks made 34 appearances in all competitions for Northampton last season, chipping in with four goals following his arrival from Rangers last summer.

Rotherham are expected to be busy before the close of the transfer window, after a humbling opening day 5-1 defeat to Brentford. Millers boss Paul Warne is an admirer of Crooks and his versatility in that he can play in midfield as well as defence. 

Northampton are reluctant to lose Crooks as they look to mount a promotion bid back to League One, but they know they cannot stand in his way if the player is offered the chance to move to the Championship.
