West Ham United drew 1-1 with Mainz on Tuesday evening before beating them on penalties.
West Ham United's pre-season preparations continued on Tuesday evening as they took on German side Mainz, drawing 1-1 in Austria before winning on penalties.
Manuel Pellegrini's side have been playing against Championship sides recently, drawing 2-2 at Preston North End before beating Aston Villa 3-1 and Ipswich Town 3-1.
Yet on Tuesday, the Hammers headed over to Austria to take on Mainz, and the first half ended goalless despite Pellegrini picking a strong West Ham side.
Young striker Toni Martinez did put West Ham in front after the break though as he looks to push towards the first team, before Robin Quaison equalised for Mainz.
The game went all the way to penalties, and after both teams missed their opening kicks, Gaetan Bussman blazed his kick over the bar, handing West Ham the win – and the Betway Cup.
West Ham won't be too excited about that piece of silverware, but will be glad to have another game under their belts ahead of the Premier League kick off, with one new signing catching the eye.
Pellegrini swooped to sign Corinthians defender Fabian Balbuena last month, with the Paraguayan international arriving in a bargain deal to boost West Ham's defensive options.
So far, the 26-year-old has looked solid, and fans took to Twitter to praise his display against Mainz, praising one saving tackle at the end of the game whilst suggesting that he is a 'steal' in such an inflated transfer market, backing him to be a key signing.
Balbuena looked very good! What a tackle right and the end aswell— Judd (@j_selby2) July 31, 2018
Balbuena is looking a decent signing so far, solid at the back! Hopefully diop can settle down sooner rather than later too— (@GChannon_) July 31, 2018
Fabian Balbuena is gonna be the steal of the century. The General could end up The Captain— WhereverWhoever (@tonyhall84) July 31, 2018
We look better at the back with Balbuena & Diop with Rice in front #WestHam— Rob Waldon WHUFC (@RobWaldon) July 31, 2018
Balbuena is absolutely solid— West Ham Daily (@WestHam_daily) July 31, 2018
Balbuena looks solid. £3.5m could be an absolute steal for him.— Michael Bailey (@mikebailey92) July 31, 2018
At £3.5m Balbuena is looking like an astute bit of business. We've not seen him against an Aguero/Aubameyang yet, so judgement kind of reserved. But still, looks a snip so far.— (@McAvennie) July 31, 2018
Balbuena is class— Alex Rae (@__alexrae__) July 31, 2018
