Mbemba has finally left Newcastle to join FC Porto.
Chancel Mbemba has finally ended his Newcastle United nightmare by escaping through the exit route and teaming up with Portuguese giants FC Porto – and former Toon teammate Massadio Haidara congratulated him on Instagram.
The 23-year-old has endured two difficult seasons under Rafa Benitez, being ostracised following the club’s relegation and only featuring intermittently during Newcastle’s promotion-winning campaign of 2016-17.
Last season, he managed just nine Premier League appearances, failing to play in the league in 2018. The 42-time DR Congo international has now finally left, penning a long-term deal with the Portuguese outfit.
Haidara, who also left Newcastle this summer to join French Ligue 2 side RC Lens on a free transfer, congratulated Mbemba on his move and described the powerhouse centre-back as a “top player”.
The Northern Echo claim Newcastle have raked in £8million for Mbemba, the same fee The Toon spent on the central defender to lure him to St. James’ Park from Belgian giants Anderlecht.
It leaves Rafa Benitez with just Jamaal Lascelles, Florian Lejeune and Ciaran Clark, though the impressive pre-season performances of youngster Josef Yarney could be considered by the former Real Madrid boss.
Newcastle are in action on Tuesday night as they travel to face Championship side Hull City, before playing Mbemba’s new side FC Porto and German outfit Augsburg to round off their pre-season fixtures.
