Gerrard has overhauled the Gers' defence since taking over at Ibrox in May, spending £3 million on former Premier League man Goldson and another £2.5 million on Katic.
The towering duo are yet to concede a goal in any of the three games that they have played together - a 6-0 thrashing of Bury in a friendly, and the 2-0 aggregate win over Shkupi in the Europa League.
And although Gerrard says that both are very impressive on an individual level, he did not expect them to gel together so quickly.
"With the two centre-backs, one is young, Nikola Katic, and I knew Connor Goldson would be experience and hungry to play," he told The Glasgow Evening Times.
"I knew they were two good players in their own right but as a partnership they have gelled quickly, probably a little bit quicker than I thought."
If Rangers achieve anything under Gerrard in his debut season, it's imperative that Goldson and Katic are rock solid throughout the campaign.
The Ibrox side signed Fabio Cardoso and Bruno Alves last summer but they were never the paradigm of solidity when the duo played alongside one another and it led to defeats.
With the likes of Jamie Murphy, Josh Windass and Alfredo Morelos in the ranks, Rangers, who out-scored Celtic last season, will get plenty of goals, and if they can keep them out at the other end then that is tremendous progress.
