A number of Leeds fans took to Twitter to praise Mateusz Klich after watching his performance during the Whites' pre-season friendly with York City on Thursday night.
Heading into the game, the Leeds supporters would have been forgiven for wondering what the future may hold for the Poland international. A difficult start to life at Elland Road was followed by a loan move back to the Eredivisie from January, and his absence from Marcelo Bielsa's squad against Forest Green Rovers earlier this week hinted that he has work to do to impress his new head coach.
But he did get the chance to shine against York. The 28-year-old was picked as part of the back three in the first-half and seemed to put in a decent performance. While he did commit a few silly fouls, he also looked incredibly comfortable when he was on the ball, frequently driving out of the back line and into the midfield.
He got the chance to move further forward in the second-half as Hugo Diaz came on to play at the back. And he seemed to make much more of an impact in the middle of the park, linking up nicely with new signing Lewis Baker as Leeds came from behind to draw 1-1.
And it was a performance that left several Leeds supporters urging Bielsa to give Klich more of a chance than Thomas Christiansen did before his loan exit.
Klich offers plenty of versatility and many felt that he was actually the best player on the pitch. And while Bielsa may be reluctant to draw major conclusions from the game on its own, it would not be a surprise if the midfielder had gone up in his estimation after his performance.
Here is what some of the Leeds supporters made of Klich's display...
Klich and Baker looked good. Pearce and Clarke linked well. Wanted more aggression from Clarke though. Ideguchi tried but is not a winger. First game for these lads though so means nothing really— mish (@mishLUFC) July 19, 2018
Klich comfortably the best player on the park tonight.— Zak Lewis (@ZakLewis17) July 19, 2018
People will complain about that but as long as Bielsa has identified who is ready to take forward with him into the season it’s worth it, De Bock and Klich look worth a squad place and Clarke grew into the game too #lufc— Ryan Pinnick (@RPlufc93) July 19, 2018
Klich could be a great addition in the main squad.— Karl (@Kdlittle26) July 19, 2018
Klich MOTM for us imo. Ideguchi had a decent game, faded a bit in the second half. Dalby, Pearce & Baker all decent too - Baker & Klich in the middle works well - really need another centre-back and a target man #lufc— Sam (@spudy04) July 19, 2018
Good showing from Klich and Baker, with Tom Pearce not far behind. All I would expect to be somewhere near the starting 11 / subs. Others down improvements needed, but it’s early doors ⚽️ #LUFC— Leanne Judge ⚽️ (@LeanneJudgeUK) July 19, 2018
Klich deserves a proper chance this pre season— Kevin Dwyer (@lufcchamps92) July 19, 2018
Klich looked decent. Dalby useful as well as Jack Clarke and Diaz who looks like he can play out of defence #lufc— Gary LUFC (@Gary_Calter) July 19, 2018
Jack Clarke, Sam Dalby, Klich the standouts from this game. Can’t read too much into it though.— James (@JamesLUFC) July 19, 2018
How did Thomas Christensen and Paul Heckingbottom both think O’Kane was better than Klich #LUFC— BD12White (@BD12White) July 19, 2018
Klich has been excellent but had to shut down the LUTV app after it kept going back 5 minutes and I’d have to restart the app . I’ll check twitter instead— LUFC Worldwide (@LUFC_WorldWide) July 19, 2018
