Championship duo Queens Park Rangers and Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Australia’s World Cup defender Trent Sainsbury.

We’re at that time of year where any exit-linked player being pictured at an airport or with a passport in hand is guaranteed to ramp up the speculation over his future. And it is no different with Trent Sainsbury.
The Sun on Sunday (24 June, page 60) reported that Aston Villa and Queens Park Rangers were interested in the experienced Australian defender.
The 26-year-old has 38 caps for his country and started all three group stage games as Bert van Marwijk’s side were eliminated in the first round of this summer’s World Cup. Sainsbury is currently contracted to Chinese Super League outfit Jiangsu Suning, but has spent time on loan at Inter Milan and Swiss side Grasshoppers of late.
On Friday, Goal reported that Sainsbury’s career with Suning was all but over after he was dropped to the reserves. It is understood that he wants to move to Europe, having turned down a lucrative contract in the Middle East.
And Sainsbury has only added fuel to the fire with his latest Instagram story, with one fan claiming on Twitter that he is holding a British Airways boarding pass.
At the moment, QPR appear to have a massive advantage over Aston Villa with Steve Bruce’s side strapped for cash.
But if Jack Grealish’s expected departure goes through, maybe Villa could afford to set aside a bit of money to sign a much needed centre-back.
