Kevin Mbabu never made one single appearance in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers – but is now a reported target for Fulham after starring in Switzerland

Rangers fans could be forgiven for forgetting all about Kevin Mbabu.

The defender moved from one Mike Ashley club to another in February 2015 when he swapped Newcastle United for Ibrox on a loan deal until the end of the season. But it is fair to say his spell in Scotland didn’t quite go to plan.

Arriving at Rangers alongside fellow Newcastle youngsters Gael Birigimana, Haris Vuckic, Remi Streete and Shane Ferguson, Mbabu was arguably the worst of the lot by quite some distance.

He didn’t play a single senior game for the club and did not even appear on the bench. To make matters worse, Mbabu was even hauled off at half time as Celtic thrashed the Light Blues 5-2 in the Youth Cup final at Hampden Park.

Fortunately for Mbabu, however, his career is heading in the right direction now.

Newcastle sold the 23-year-old to Swiss outfit Young Boys last summer and he hasn’t looked back since. Mbabu was a revelation in Switzerland, helping the Bern-based outfit to their first league title in 32 years while also being named in the SFL Team of the Year for 2017.

Now, he is being linked with a return to England via Fulham with a £10 million price-tag on his head. Basel, who finished 15 points behind Young Boys, have seen a £7 million bid snubbed.

So it’s fair to say he has come a long way since that nightmare spell at Rangers.
