Should Rangers abandon reported interest in Milad Mohammadi?

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly keen to bring Milad Mohammadi to Ibrox this summer, but perhaps Steven Gerrard should reconsider any interest.

According to a recent report from The Scottish Sun, Rangers are amongst the sides interested in signing Milad Mohammadi this summer as Steven Gerrard continues his significant overhaul at Ibrox.

Mohammadi is an Iran international who gained notoriety during the World Cup for a bizarre attempt at an acrobatic throw-in that failed miserably during his country’s defeat to Spain.

Despite that, the £2 million-rated left-back is a promising talent and would offer Gerrard plenty of versatility given that he can also play on the other side of the defence or slightly further forward on the wing.

Nevertheless, after the first-leg of Rangers’ Europa League qualifier with Shkupi on Thursday, it would appear that it may not be a terrible idea for Rangers to consider abandoning their interest in Mohammadi and instead concentrating their attention elsewhere.

John Flanagan made his competitive debut in the victory against the Macedonian side and arguably gave a decent account of himself at Ibrox. He seemed reluctant to move the ball onto his left foot, and that perhaps prevented the former Liverpool ace from providing as much support in the final third as Gerrard may have liked, but he certainly provided an indication that he is going to be a fantastic signing on a free transfer.

And when you consider that Declan John was on the bench after a season where he established himself as Rangers’ first-choice left-back, Gerrard arguably really does not need to consider spending seven-figure sums on another left-back at this stage of the window.

Of course, Mohammadi – like Flanagan – ticks a lot more boxes than simply being a left-back, but Rangers are still looking light up front and probably need to get another centre-back through the door before the new Scottish Premiership season begins.

Gerrard may not be drawing too many conclusions from the first-leg of the tie with Shkupi, but perhaps he can conclude that left-back is not an area that Rangers need to add to right now unless the perfect potential deal emerges. With Mohammadi something of an unknown quantity, it is probably fair to say that continuing any pursuit makes little sense currently.
