Do Celtic now have their chance to sign Dundee's Steven Caulker?

Brendan Rodgers manager of Celtic gives his team instructions during the Scottish Cup Final between Motherwell and Celtic at Hampden Park on May 19, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers worked with Steven Caulker during the 2011/12 Premier League season at Swansea City.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is seen during a training session at Lennoxtown Training Centre on April 27, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Despite being able to call upon Jozo Simunovic, Dedryck Boyata, Jack Hendry, Kristoffer Ajer, Marvin Compper and even Nir Bitton, most Celtic fans would argue that their side needs to sign a new centre-back this summer.

So what about Steven Caulker?

A former England international defender, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers knows Caulker very well from his excellent loan spell at Swansea City back in the 2011/12 season.

And the Northern Irish manager indicated last summer that he might be interested in reuniting with the former Tottenham Hotspur youngster, describing him as an 'awesome talent'. Now, Rodgers could have the chance to do just that.

According to the Scottish Sun, Caulker’s future at Dundee is in doubt after less than half a season at Dens Park. It is claimed that the 26-year-old was sent home from the club’s pre-season training camp and manager Neil McCann now has to make a decision on his future.

But should Celtic take this opportunity to swoop in? Caulker has now proved himself in the top tier of Scottish football having impressed for Dundee and, if Rodgers could coax the sort of form that he showed at Swansea, the 6ft 3ins powerhouse has the potential and the talent to walk into Celtic’s starting XI.

According to the Mirror, Celtic held talks with Caulker about a move to Glasgow last summer and it will be interesting to see how they react to his uncertain situation at Dundee.
