England’s run in the World Cup came to an end on Wednesday night after a 2-1 defeat in extra time to Croatia in the semi finals.
However, Gareth Southgate’s squad did the nation proud and a number of individuals have delivered some truly astonishing performances.
Jamie Redknapp has graded the England players after the heartbreaking Croatia loss and gave attacking midfielder Dele Alli a 7/10.
He feels the Tottenham ace looked good when in possession, but labelled him “passive” and suggested losing the midfield battle gave Croatia the edge.
“When he was involved, he was excellent. The moments when he got on the ball his confidence seemed sky high,” Redknapp wrote in the Daily Mail.
“The problem was that he was far too passive in such an important match. He should have played a much bigger role in midfield for England.
“We were not creative enough, having just two efforts on target, and in the second half England were overrun in midfield by Modric and Rakitic.”
Alli has not quite hit full gear in the World Cup campaign, but has been vital to the England side nonetheless and did score a header in the quarter finals against Sweden.
The 22-year-old's energy has seen him combine well with Manchester United's Jesse Lingard and both have proven themselves to be extremely effective players in the Premier League.
They will return to their club sides after the third place play-off on Saturday with Belgium and will surely be mainstays in this England side for the foreseeable future.
