Tottenham Hotspur stars Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele have all taken to Twitter to share their feelings about coming so close to playing in a World Cup final, after Belgium were beaten 1-0 by France in St. Petersburg.

Roberto Martinez's side were knocked out of the tournament by Les Bleus courtesy of a Samuel Umtiti header early in the second half, and will fly home licking their wounds as their wait for a major trophies continues.

Belgium were actually unlucky in the game, and it could easily have gone in their favour if not for some great saves by Spurs stopper Hugo Lloris.

France held out though, and will now contest the final with either England or Croatia for the chance to win their second World Cup, 20 years on from their first.

The defeat was particularly hard for Tottenham trio Vertonghen, Alderweireld and Dembele. Vertonghen especially was one of Belgium's best performers at the tournament, and he scored a superb looping header against Japan in the last 16 which helped sparked a comeback from 2-0 down.

The former Ajax defender took to social media to let fans know how he was feeling the morning after the night before. He said: "Gutted to lose in the Semi-Finals. We gave it our all. The support from all the fans in Russia & back home has been unbelievable. Thank you."

Alderweireld echoed his fellow defender, saying: "Belgium, we wanted it so bad. We did everything we could. A big thank you to all our fans for the incredible support. One more game to go, let's fight for that third place."

Dembele added: "Thanks to all the fans for your support on this journey. Disappointed not to be into the final but we will be back."

Once the third place play-off is done and dusted, work will begin for Martinez to prepare for the the next European Championships, where this talented bunch of individuals will no doubt have their sights set on winning the whole thing.

Here are some of the responses to Tottenham's representatives from the club's fans, with Vertonghen in particular receiving some high praise:
