Sunderland have taken striker Anton Forrester on trial.

Sunderland’s preparations for the new season continued on Tuesday night as they took on Darlington, with the game ending in a 1-0 defeat for the Black Cats.

New manager Jack Ross is attempting to rebuild Sunderland after their second straight relegation, with promotion from League One the target for the upcoming campaign.

Sunderland kept it local with Tuesday’s pre-season friendly as they took on non-league neighbours Darlington, but they lost 1-0 thanks to Jordan Nicholson’s goal.

New signings Alim Ozturk, Tom Flanagan, Reece James and Chris Maguire all started for Sunderland, whilst there was a surprise name in attack as Anton Forrester led the line.

The 24-year-old is on trial with Sunderland and played for an hour before being substituted, and it’s fair to say that his opportunity with the Black Cats has come as a huge shock.

Forrester, formerly on the books at Everton and Blackburn Rovers, scored seven goals in 30 games on loan with Bury during the 2013-14 campaign, but then failed to score in a four-game loan spell with Morecambe.

A 2016 move to Port Vale followed, but he left the League Two side this summer after scoring just five goals in 41 games – and it’s fair to say that Vale fans are completely baffled by Forrester’s trial spell with Sunderland.

Vale fans were asking just who Forrester’s agent is having landed him a trial with the Black Cats, with others stunned and amazed after such a disappointing spell in the fourth tier, whilst some were feeling sorry for Sunderland if Forrester is the calibre of player they’re looking to bring in.
