Jack Wilshere has signed a three-year deal with West Ham United in one of the most high profile transfers of the summer so far.
West Ham completed the free transfer signing of Wilshere on Monday after the midfielder’s release from Arsenal.
The Hammers were one of a number of clubs linked with a move for Wilshere but it was new West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini who won the race for the 26-year-old midfielder after he left the Gunners on July 1.
The signing of boyhood Hammer Wilshere has stirred debate in footballing circles.
Some pundits feel the former Bournemouth loanee should have challenged himself by moving abroad with several Italian clubs and Fenerbache reportedly keen on his services, as reported by Sky Sports.
But Jamie Redknapp, son of former Hammers player and manager Harry, disagrees and told Sky Sports Wilshere and West Ham are the perfect fit.
“They need an icon, they need a hero again, they love their Dimitri Payets, the Trevor Brookings, the players that can do something different at that club,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“I’m sure he can fit the bill.
“He’s very similar to myself in that he’s unfortunately plays with injuries but if he can keep himself fit there’s no reason why he can’t be in the next England squad.
“He’s only 25/26, still got plenty of game time in him and I hope he does well.
“I’m pleased he’s staying in the country and I think West Ham’s a good fit for him. He’s got to be ready for the challenge because the West Ham fans, if things aren’t going well they can be pretty ferocious as we’ve seen this year.
“But they’ll be crying out for a hero there and I’m sure he can do a good job, it’s a good move for him.”
