A number of Tottenham fans took to Twitter to laud Toby Alderweireld after his superb performance helped Belgium book their World Cup semi-final ticket by beating Brazil 2-1 in Kazan.

Roberto Martinez's men may have perhaps been underdogs for the contest given the two countries' respective World Cups records. Brazil have won the tournament five times and would have been hoping to give themselves the chance to rewrite history after their embarrassing defeat in the last four four years ago. Belgium meanwhile, were aiming for their first semi-final since 1986.

But it was the Europeans who were celebrating at full-time. An own goal from Fernandinho and a beautiful strike from Kevin De Bruyne gave them a 2-0 lead at the break, and some superb defending - particularly from the Spurs pair in Belgium's side - meant that Renato Augusto's header was the only time that Brazil had something to celebrate.

In truth, Tottenham pair Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen were exceptional at the back. With 14 minutes to go, Brazil had handed themselves a lifeline, and yet, there were few moments which suggested that the Spurs duo were about to let the South American forwards dance through to get a close range shot at Thibaut Courtois. In fact, a lovely effort from Neymar seemed to be the only time that the Belgians may have felt compelled to hold their breath in the dying moments.

The performances of most of the Belgium team received praise, but Alderweireld's display was shown a lot of love by the Tottenham fans on social media, with many suggesting that his showing highlighted why the club must do everything to convince him to stay.

As reported by The Telegraph recently, he has failed to agree a new deal with Spurs and is unlikely to be a part of Mauricio Pochettino's squad next season. But the performance in Kazan helped remind many Spurs fans just how big a loss the defender - who earns £80,000-a-week at Tottenham, according to Spotrac - is going to be if he does end up leaving this summer.

Here is what some of the Spurs fans made of Alderweireld's display...
