Newcastle United made a failed £15m bid for Eredivisie striker Nicolai Jorgensen in January, but Feyenoord would reportedly sell for that price now.

Nicolai Jorgensen of Feyenoord celebrates after scoring during the Eredivisie match between Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar at The Kuip Stadium, Rotterdam on March 11, 2018.

It has all gone a little bit wrong for Nicolai Jorgensen since he was denied a big-money move to Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

Sky Sports claimed that Newcastle had seen a £15 million bid rejected for the Feyenoord targetman. And between then and the end of the season, Jorgensen hit just three goals in 16 games over in Holland as the 2017 Eredivisie champions limped to a fourth-place finish.

He then struggled badly in the World Cup with Denmark, missing in the penalty shoot-out defeat to Croatia in the round of 16.

As a result, the Northern Echo reports that Feyenoord are now prepared to lower their asking price for Jorgensen, who was rated around £20 million a few months ago. The report even states that £15 million would be enough now, with the Rotterdam giants looking to cash in.

It is understood that Jorgensen wants to leave and Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez remains a firm admirer of a player who won the Eredivisie’s Golden Boot in 2016/17, as he fired Feyenoord to their first league title since 1999.

But the report adds that Nice’s Alassane Plea is Benitez’s first choice, with Salomon Rondon of West Brom a backup option.

While Jorgensen is still on his radar, the great Dane has certainly slipped down the pecking order.
