Harry Smith (R) in action for Millwall against Port Vale

League Two newcomers Macclesfield Town are set to beat Port Vale to the signing of former Millwall striker Harry Smith, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Smith is available on a free transfer after being released by Millwall at the end of last season.

A number of clubs have shown an interest in Smith and Port Vale seemed to be favourites to secure his signature, but Macclesfield have moved late to convince the player to join the National League champions.

Smith is due to undergo a medical at Moss Rose on Wednesday, before becoming the club’s latest new signing as they prepare for life back in the Football League.

The 23-year-old made his professional debut in 2016 and spent the first half of last season on loan at League Two Swindon.

Smith scored two goals in 19 appearances for Swindon before returning to the Den.

The skilful forward found his first-team chances limited at Millwall, but he still managed to score six goals in 12 appearances, including a memorable hat-trick in a FA Cup win over Braintree Town in December 2016.

Macclesfield boss Mark Yates believes Smith can be a valuable addition to his plans as the Silkmen look to establish themselves in League Two next season.
