Everton were previously linked with a move for Carvalho.

Sporting Lisbon holding midfielder is reportedly closing in on a move to La Liga side Real Betis for a fee of £17.6million after multiple links with Premier League clubs – but Everton fans have reacted with relief.

Portuguese outlet Record claimed on their website that Carvalho was nearing a move to Spanish side Betis, after Portugal were knocked out of the World Cup by Uruguay in the Round of 16.

The Daily Mirror claimed last month that Everton were waiting to see what was to happen surrounding the 26-year-old’s contract situation at Sporting Lisbon.

Carvalho was one of the players requesting to have his contract terminated, alongside the likes of Bas Dost and Bruno Fernandes, after an attack on the Portuguese giants’ training ground.

Though it is believed that Carvalho was to become a free agent, it is believed that in order to avoid legal issues, a cut-price fee is likely to be agreed for those interested in Sporting’s wantaway stars. Betis have now exercised that option.

It is expected that the 47-time Portugal international will move to Spain ahead of a move to the Premier League and Everton, but Toffees fans are delighted to see their club miss out on the holding midfielder.
