Gareth Southgate's side were taken to extra time after Barcelona centre-back Yerry Mina cancelled out Harry Kane's penalty with just two minutes of normal time remaining.
No further goals in extra time meant that England would have to overcome their fear of penalties if they were to reach an enticing quarter-final showdown with Sweden, and the Three Lions advanced 4-3 after Jordan Pickford's save from Carlos Bacca opened the door for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier.
England were good value for their win, with Colombia doing very little to deserve progression into the next round. The South Americans were disappointing on the night, and resorted to gamesmanship on numerous occasions.
There were top performances though from a number of Three Lions stars, including Harry Maguire, Harry Kane and of course, Jordan Pickford. Also catching the eye again though, was Tottenham full-back Kieran Trippier.
The marauding 27-year-old has had a fine tournament so far, and was on his game again against Colombia, who struggled to deal with his pace down the right.
The Tottenham man was again excellent on set pieces and crossing from open play, and he has established himself as a genuine source of creativity. He even stepped up to convert in the penalty shootout, and fans were left purring at the end of the game:

Kieran Trippier is going to return to Tottenham with such confidence. He's had a terrific World Cup so far and he's got such a brilliant mentality. He's a really modest chap and so humble and it's lovely to see him shining on the world stage. Such a calm penalty.— Alasdair Gold (@AlasdairGold) 3 July 2018

Kieran Trippier was absolutely outstanding again tonight, Kane will understandably grab the headlines but he’s been the breakout player of England’s World Cup for me.— HLTCO (@HLTCO) 3 July 2018
