Liverpool have finally unveiled their latest summer addition Naby Keita after he completed a £53million move from RB Leipzig, and the midfielder will be wearing the number 8 Jersey during his time at the club.
No one has worn the number 8 Jersey since May 2015, when Gerrard left for LA Galaxy and, as if the pressure of playing for Liverpool as one of their most expensive signings is not enough, Keita has now been saddled with the responsibility of replicating Gerrard's heroics.
While the challenge is one the 23-year-old certainly relishes, with his massive talent and potential also hinting at a great player in the making, becoming the next Stevie G is not the easiest of tasks given the extraordinary achievements of the Anfield legend.
The current Rangers manager bled Liverpool and was a Red through and through, popping up with timely goals during the peak of his career and providing excellent leadership on and off the pitch.
With a majority of fans always expecting new club signings to hit the ground running, inadvertently inviting extra pressure on Keita by handing him the iconic number could backfire if things do not go well from the start.
The midfielder's disciplinary record (four red cards last season) and temper will come under scrutiny in the Premier League, with rivals and officials bound to keep a close eye on him and, should he make headlines for the wrong reasons, it could be a troubling start to his Liverpool career.
All eyes are now on Liverpool's new number 8 and, while he has everything it takes to succeed, succeeding Gerrard and playing his way into the club's folklore will be tough, and there is no doubt that there will be a lot of pressure on Keita.
Living up to the reputation of that number is a huge task for the youngster, and one can only wonder if he will come out unscathed at the end of it all.
