Joel Asoro seemingly wants to leave Sunderland this summer. He has recently been linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Joel Asoro of Sunderland scores the opening goal during the Sky Bet Championship match between Fulham and Sunderland at Craven Cottage on April 27, 2018 in London, England.

Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has perhaps put clubs such as Tottenham and Wolves on alert after he confirmed to the Roker Report that Joel Asoro’s agent has told him that he wishes to leave Sunderland this summer.

The Black Cats are preparing for life in League One after suffering their second relegation in as many seasons. Unsurprisingly, a number of Sunderland fans will be expecting several of their players to look to leave the Stadium of Light during the coming weeks.

And new owner Donald has confirmed that Asoro is one of those players whose representatives have suggested that he is keen to leave – though he did also suggest that he has not given up trying to get him to stay.

“Joel Asoro, according to his agent, doesn’t want to stay and doesn’t like the club because of something that’s happened and I need to get to the bottom of that, and I’m hoping if we talk to Joel and iron that out with a nice conversation with Jack, hopefully he’ll want to stay,” he told the Roker Report.

Mauricio Pochettino manager

The news is set to alert a number of clubs, including Tottenham and newly-promoted Wolves. The Daily Star Sunday (13/05; page 49) reported last month that Wolves are eyeing a move for the forward while Spurs are amongst the sides who have been watching the youngster in recent times.

While Asoro is learning his game, there is an argument that he would be a very welcome addition to Wolves’ squad, and would have the potential to make a real impact for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the future.

He was not prolific last season, but he showed some real flashes of brilliance – most notably, scoring a wonderful long-range strike away at Fulham in the latter stages of the campaign. The Cottagers would, of course, end up getting promoted alongside Wolves.

It will now be interesting to see whether the likes of Spurs and Nuno Espirito Santo’s men step up any levels of interest that they have following Donald’s suggestion that a move away could be on the cards.
