Rangers are reportedly interested in Jon Flanagan, the defender who thrived under current Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool.

Rangers’ links with Jon Flanagan have certainly got the fans talking.

As reported by the Daily Record, Steven Gerrard is considering a move for his former Liverpool teammate who, at the age of 25, finds himself without a club after a series of devastating injuries wrecked his once gleaming Anfield prospects.

Gerrard believes he can get Flanagan back on track and there is certainly plenty of raw talent to work with. Once tipped for the top by Brazil legend Cafu and capped by England, the Liverpool-born defender still has plenty of time to realise his potential.

But what makes this rumour so intriguing is that Gerrard would be signing a player who his Celtic counterpart Brendan Rodgers once adored.

Flanagan emerged as a key player for Liverpool during their 2013/14 season under Rodgers, during which they came so close to the Premier League title and played some truly scintillating football; not least in the 5-0 away thrashing of Spurs in which the homegrown youngster crashed in his first senior goal.

“He’s a terrific boy. Whoever he’s up against, he doesn’t change. I thought when he came in for a few games this was a kid that can handle it,” Rodgers told the Independent in December 2013.

“And since he came in and played in the derby, where he was man of the match against Everton, he’s been fantastic. His confidence has grown and grown over time.”

If Flanagan could put together a regular run of games for Rangers, who is to say he could not get back to those levels again?
