Everton fans have been reacting on Twitter to the reports emerging from The Telegraph this week which have suggested that the Toffees have joined the race to sign Ajax starlet Matthijs de Ligt this summer.
After an underwhelming campaign last time out, new Everton chief Marcel Brands needs to get plenty of work done this summer, with the defence surely having to be a priority.
No team in the top eight conceded more goals than the Merseyside outfit last season, and Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka are certainly edging towards the end of their careers. And it appears that the Toffees are ready to push the boat out as they look to replace the pair.
The Telegraph reports that Everton have joined some of Europe's biggest sides in the battle to sign de Ligt, who is likely to cost around £50 million this summer having already established himself in Ajax's first-team and gained a handful of caps for The Netherlands.
While the Everton supporters on social media appear to be delighted with the links, many are refusing to get carried away as they feel that the Toffees actually have little chance of being able to compete with the other teams chasing his signature.
There is no question however, that many feel that de Ligt would be a sensational addition to the squad this summer and would be significantly better than what the club already have at their disposal.
Here is the best of the reaction to the reports...
0.00% chance of signing De Ligt. Has Europe’s top teams chasing him. This equates to Simeone being Moshiri’s number 1 manager target in plausibility!— Gareth Ratcliffe (@N9GJR) June 18, 2018
Don't think we could either of them, but I'd take de Ligt in a heartbeat— ⭕Christian (@SwaggyMSilva) June 18, 2018
Take the both of them all day— JG (@J_G892) June 18, 2018
Not convinced we'll sign either but at least we're showing a bit of ambition.— Mike Thompson (@toffeecrunch25) June 18, 2018
De Ligt is a tank but I'm wary of paying big fees from the Dutch league.— Michael (@mickblue1) June 18, 2018
