Newcastle United have previously been linked with a move for Alfred Finnbogason, and the fans were impressed in Iceland’s World Cup opener.

A number of Newcastle fans took to Twitter to comment on Alfred Finnbogason’s display during Iceland’s World Cup opener where the European side held Argentina to a 1-1 draw in Moscow.

After their exploits in France two years ago and the relative ease in which they qualified for this summer’s competition, it would certainly be unfair to continue describing Iceland as minnows. Nevertheless, few would have expected them to get anything out of their opening group game.

And the concerns for Iceland would have increased further when Sergio Aguero gave Jorge Sampaoli’s side the lead inside 20 minutes with a superb finish inside the box. However, Argentina would only be ahead for four minutes.

Finnbogason capitalised on Willy Caballero being unable to hold onto a cross and found the bottom corner in a congested six-yard box to equalise as they ended the day in third spot in their group after Croatia beat Nigeria in the evening.

The 29-year-old was extremely impressive throughout the contest, asking a number of questions of the Argentina defence. And his display certainly caught the eye of some of the Newcastle fans.

The Chronicle reported towards the end of the January window that the Augsburg man was a player that Rafa Benitez had discussed potentially targeting in the final hours of the window, and based on his display in Russia and the reaction to it, it would appear that there is a decent section of the Toon Army that would love to see the Magpies reignite their interest this summer.

Here is some of the reaction to Finnbogason’s display…
