Among those who could be free agents this summer are reported Premier League targets Bas Dost and midfielder William Carvalho, with fans excited at the prospect of securing the players for nothing more than a signing-on fee.
West Ham have had an interest in Carvalho since at least last summer when they supposedly went as far as making a bid for the player, although in recent weeks it has looked like Everton may have stolen a march for the Portuguese international.
On top of that, Everton are reportedly interested in Dost, according to Dutch outlet Algemeen Dagblad.
And so, naturally, the news that these players could be available for free is an exciting one for the two Premier League sides, but it might not be so ideal.
Both Everton and West Ham had seemigly looked at the players and decided that the outlay of their fees was perfectly suited for what they needed, making them the most talked about destinations.
Now, however, the chance of signing the two is drastically decreased, potentially bringing a whole host of new suitors to the table.
Form competing with each other for two very talented players, West Ham and Everton may now have a tougher job convincing the players that they should be the ones listened to if the noise around Dost and Carvalho increases.
If they can get hold of the players they want, then everything is clearly ideal - securing your targets for free is how every club wishes the summer will go - but West Ham's and Everton's chances of getting them at all are now lower than before with the duo potentially having their pick of clubs.
It is a trade-off that could go either way.
