Newcastle United reportedly want to snatch Marcus Edwards from Premier League rivals Spurs, will Benitez triumph over Pochettino?

Marcus Edwards reportedly feels that he has no chance of making a name for himself at Tottenham Hotspur.

The highly-talented 19-year-old has only ever made one first-team appearance for Spurs and The Guardian reports that he has grown tired of waiting for his chance. It is understood that Edwards wants to leave this summer.

And The Chronicle believes that Newcastle United could offer the teenage attacker an escape route. Newcastle, along with Ajax and RB Leipzig, are both hot on the trial of Edwards with Spurs refusing to stand in his way.

But is Edwards about to make a massive mistake before his career has even begun? You could argue that it would be easier breaking into Newcastle’s first-team than that of Tottenham.

After all, while Spurs have Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Hueng-Min Son and Erik Lamela fighting for a place in the number ten role, Newcastle only really have Ayoze Perez.

But if you were to compare Mauricio Pochettino with Rafa Benitez in the youth development stakes, there is only one winner.

Not a single member of Newcastle’s youth ranks has blossomed into a regular first-team member in two years under Benitez with the likes of Ivan Toney and Adam Armstrong still lacking their manager’s trust despite fine loan spells elsewhere.

Pochettino, however, is perhaps the best manager in England when it comes to transforming potential into star quality. Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Harry Kane, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose and Dele Alli all became established international’s under the Argentine’s tutelage.

And it is worth remembering that Pochettino rates Edwards so high that he once likened him to a young Leo Messi. Perhaps he should remember this before deciding that the grass greener on Tyneside.
