Reports claim the 35-year-old free agent could be set for a switch to reunited with old Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini at West Ham.
But as proved by West Ham's signings of the likes of Patrice Evra, Pablo Zabaleta, Alvaro Arbeloa and now Ryan Fredericks in recent windows, the owners love a freebie.
While most Premier League managers will be looking to the World Cup to scout potential new signings ahead of what promises to be another fiercely competitive campaign, supporters on Twitter have suggested West Ham were more likely looking at Socceraid - the charity football match which pairs ex-pros with celebrities in an England vs World XI exhibition match.
And Twitter wasn't kind in assessing the West Ham-linked star's performance.
He was roundly savaged with one fan describing his performance as 'bizarre' and others stating they would rather see the Hammers sign Bolt or Murs.
Here's a selection of some of the tweets on Toure's performance.

Wouldn’t be surprised if West Ham are genuinely watching Soccer Aid to scout Yaya Toure— Tyler Lingwood (@TylerLingwood) June 10, 2018
Soccer Aid is great.— Kevin Kane (@kevinkane325) June 10, 2018
Where else would you get Eric Cantona coming on for Yaya Toure, passing the ball to Usain Bolt, who dribbles past Freddie Flintoff.
Only for it to go to penalties to be won in sudden death by Neil from The Inbetweeners.
Neil from the Inbetweeners has just scored the winning penalty in a football that had Cantona, Veron, Robbie Keane and Yaya Toure - amazing #SoccerAid— Jord. (@JordRobinson23) June 10, 2018
Ya ya Toure’s performance in soccer aid was bizzare - if any club was watching that, they would not touch him with a barge pole— Paul Lagan (@CFCJourno) June 10, 2018
If Toure is reluctant to come up off wave a cake to entice him #SoccerAid— Mark Brierley (@MarkBrierley1) June 10, 2018
Yaya Toure can’t even get 90 minutes in soccer aid ffs ahahahah #SoccerAid2018— Will Jones (@willjonesavfc) June 10, 2018
#SoccerAid gets worse, Clattenburg high fiven' Yaya Toure on his way off.— Angus (@Lee48765863) June 10, 2018
Roaring at Veron being more useful than current premier league champion Yaya Toure #socceraid— Owain (@Owain_Bowen) June 10, 2018

Jack Wilshere free agent, overlooked by England again
Yaya Toure can say what he likes but he’s just been schooled by Brody from Homeland in that first half so... past it lol #socceraid— Sarah ✨ (@_sarahmcc5) June 10, 2018
