Is Rangers signing Gareth McAuley and Alan Hutton a good idea?

Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers reportedly want the aging defenders from Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion respectively.

If rumours are believed, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard wants Alan Hutton and Gareth McAuley this summer.

According to The Daily Record, the Gers boss wants McAuley, 38, while The Birmingham Mail have reported that 33-year-old Rangers legend Hutton is also on the radar, 10 years after leaving Ibrox.

But it wouldn't exactly reflect well on Gerrard if he signs two defenders at a combined age of 71 this summer.

Experience is massively important, especially given that Gerrard - who is younger than McAuley - doesn't have a great deal of it in regards to managing a senior football team.

But would the former Liverpool midfielder be getting the balance wrong? Hutton and McAuley might be very experienced, but is experience going to compensate for a natural decline in their game?

With the money that both players are currently earning, and would earn at Ibrox, it wouldn't make financial sense for Rangers to sign either of them as squad players.

They would be coming to Glasgow to play and it might be a tad embarrassing for the Blues if three of their back four - including Bruno Alves - are a combined 107 years old.
