A number of Championship clubs, including Leeds United, are reportedly interested in signing Chirivella from Premier League Liverpool.

If Leeds United fans were unhappy with the sterile football on offer during that justifiably short-lived reign of Paul Heckingbottom, supporters should be happy to know that the club seems to be trying to sign a player who could finally provide some class and quality in the centre of the park.

According to Goal, Leeds are interested in signing Liverpool youngster Pedro Chirivella on loan. And, if you are reading this with a blank expression, we don’t blame you.

The 21-year-old has made just one Premier League appearance for Liverpool, coming in a defeat to Swansea in May 2016, while he has spent the last two years in Holland with Go Ahead Eagles and Willem II.

But you only have to take notice of the fact that Chirivella was once compared to Anfield legend Xabi Alonso, and was called ‘the computer’ by former Liverpool academy director Frank MacParland due to his expert reading of the game, to realise what kind of player he is.

Like so many young Spanish midfielders, Chirivella is a player who prides himself on his intelligent, accurate distribution. He is a passer, someone capable of controlling the game from the centre of the park. And, in truth, he would offer a precision that Leeds are currently lacking.

The likes of Ronaldo Vieira, Adam Forshaw and Kalvin Phillips are dynamic, aggressive midfielders but not exactly in the mould of a deep-lying play-maker.

And, with the awful kick-and-rush football of Heckingbottom in mind, Chirivella is the sort of signing who could help bring a more attractive style to Elland Road.
