Pierluigi Gollini has reportedly left Aston Villa to stay in Serie A permanently with Atalanta.

Aston Villa fans could be put through the wringer this summer.

They have already bid an emotional goodbye to John Terry and fellow fan favourites Jack Grealish, Robert Snodgrass, Sam Johnstone and even homegrown hero Jack Grealish are expected to be on their way too with Financial Fair Play sanctions looming large.

Villa need to raise £40 million as quickly as possible with the club in huge financial turmoil. But at least there is some good news.

Because Gianluca di Marzio is reporting that Pierluigi Gollini has secured a permanent move to Atalanta for a not insignificant figure of £4 million.

The Italian goalkeeper has spent the last eighteen months on loan in Serie A and has now penned a contract with the Bergamo-based side until 2023. And it would be an understatement to say that Villa fans are glad they’ve seen the back of Gollini.

The Championship was never likely to be the right environment for a young, foreign goalkeeper and, inevitably, Gollini struggled massively when he joined Villa from Hellas Verona two summers ago as a stick-thin 21-year-old.

It took just 20 games for him to lose his place and be farmed out on loan by manager Steve Bruce. And it seems that, even with Johnstone returning to Manchester United, Gollini won’t be missed in the Midlands.
