Glasgow Rangers are reportedly eyeing a move to bring Gareth McAuley to Ibrox this summer.

A number of Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to comment on reports emerging from the Daily Record which have suggested that Mark Allen has been in contact with Gareth McAuley’s representatives over a potential one-year contract at Ibrox.

The Gers have plenty of work to do this summer, and nowhere in the squad do they arguably need to do more work than at centre-back with their current options hardly capturing the imagination.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Daily Record reported that Gerrard could target as many as four new centre-backs this summer, with Connor Goldson hopefully one of those that he is hoping to land. But it may have taken fans by surprise that the Light Blues are also reportedly considering a bid for McAuley.

The Record reports that the 38-year-old is out of contract with West Brom this summer and faces an uncertain future at The Hawthorns, and Rangers have wasted little time opening discussions about a potential short-term deal at Ibrox.

The Record adds that McAuley – who earns around £35,000-a-week with the Baggies, according to Spotrac – is keen on a move to Rangers, but also has Aston Villa chasing his signature, while Gerrard is also yet to give a pursuit of the veteran the green light as he has only just begun his tenure.

Unsurprisingly, the reports have been met with an extremely mixed response on social media. A number of the Rangers supporters are completely underwhelmed by the links. McAuley is clearly coming towards the end of his career and struggled to get into a West Brom side that finished bottom of the Premier League this past season.

However, there are those who feel that the centre-back could be a fantastic addition, even at his age. One supporter points out how David Weir only joined the club in his late-thirties before enjoying a stunning period with the Gers. And while McAuley would do extremely well to enjoy anything like the same success that Weir was a part of, he is certainly one of those players who looks capable of carrying on for a couple of years if the right opportunity is there.
