Middlesbrough are the latest club to be credited with interest in Sunderland midfielder Paddy McNair.

According to the Daily Mirror (liveblog entry 14:49) Middlesbrough are monitoring McNair should he fail to secure a move to the Premier League.

The newspaper adds that Brighton are planning a fresh offer of £5 million for the player, having failed with a bid of £3.5 million.

And McNair appears destined to leave Sunderland – be it for Brighton or elsewhere – after the Mackems’ relegation to League One.

The Daily Mirror reported last week that the Northern Ireland international is a target for Middlesbrough’s Championship rivals Stoke City, Norwich City and Derby County.

England's former player Frank Lampard takes his seat for The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony, on October 23, 2017 in London.

However, only Derby are mentioned in the newspaper’s latest update.

A move to Boro could appeal to McNair, given the Teessiders’ geographical location to Sunderland, where he has spent the past two campaigns.
